Lamia, safety manager at Sogea Maroc

Establishing safety as a fundemental value

Safety is everyone’s business. This is Sogea Maroc Safety Manager Lamia Khoubbane’s watchword as she works with her teams to roll out benchmark procedures. Lamia Khoubbane introduced an unprecedented prior risk analysis method at the Jorf Lasfar industrial platform project in 2012.

She is now rolling out an additional working method at the Safi thermal power plant project site, which consists in drawing up a chronological description of each stage of the civil engineering works before it gets under way. Sogea Maroc foremen and contract managers also take part in a weekly safety rule refresher briefing. Operational audits are carried out to determine corrective action; and training programmes are held for team members exposed to dangerous situations.

“All these measures have boosted the safety culture, especially with the subcontractors,” she says. “If safety behaviour is to become second nature, everyone must be actively involved. This is self-evident in a company where safety is not just a requirement but a way of life, and where we take a long-term approach to it.”
