John, Managing Director of Spiecapag Australia

The challenge: rapidly cover long distances

“Spiecapag has been operating in Australia for 35 years and working in partnership with an Australian company, Lucas Engineering & Construction, for 25. In 2015, with the number of projects rapidly increasing, Spiecapag decided to set up a permanent entity here. We have offices in Brisbane on the east coast and a logistics hub in Toowoomba, about a hundred kilometres inland. From this Australian stagingbase, we cover Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

In 2014, we completed a gas pipeline project in Queensland, eastern Australia, and more recently we completed a similar project to supply gas to a gold mine in the western part of the country.

Currently we are building a 165 km pipeline in the states of New South Wales and Victoria. In a country like Australia, the challenge is not contending with complex environments but rather rapidly covering long distances. Pipe diameters are smaller here than in Europe, but to be competitive we have to be able to lay up to 5 kilometres of pipe a day rather than a few hundred metres as in Europe.”
