VINCI CONSTRUCTION GRANDS PROJETS, lead company in the Novarka consortium, which also includes Bouygues TP, signed on 17 september the Chernobyl “New Safe Confinement” contract with the state-owned Ukrainian company ChNPP. Ukrainian president Victor Yushchenko, French secretary of state for External trade Hervé Novelli, VINCI Chairman of the Board Yves-Thibault de Silguy and VINCI Construction Grands Projets Chairman Pierre Berger attended the signing ceremony. The contract, with a value equivalent to €432 million, covers the design and construction of an arch-shaped containment. The exceptionally large structure will be designed to accommodate dismantling of the old sarcophagus and the ruins of the reactor destroyed in the accident of 26 april 1986. It will be made up of an 18,000 tonne metal frame (three times the mass of the Eiffel tower), to contain the existing sarcophagus. the structure will be 105 metres high and 150 metres long, with a span of 257 metres. Work will get under way in october 2007 and is expected to take 53 months to complete, including 18 months for design studies.
