SOGEA-SATOM HAS WON the contract to carry out periodic maintenance on a 153 km section of national Highway 7 between Bamako, the capital, and Bougouni, the country’s second-largest city.
On a first 2 km sub-section located in an urban area on the outskirts of Bamako, the road is being widened to a dual two-lane carriageway with a central reservation, a bicycle lane and pedestrian walkways. On the remaining 151 km, over which the road will retain its current width of 7 metres, damage is simply being repaired; however, a 31 km section will be reinforced with the addition of a 100 mm layer of laterite aggregate which will be bound to the base course by recycling. a new 50 mm asphaltic concrete wearing course will then be laid over the entire length of the section. The works, with a value of €18 million, are being jointly funded by the malian government and the world Bank. Work began in early 2006 and is expected to take 24 months to complete.
